ஈழவேந்தன் ஐயா, தமிழ்த்தேசிய போராளி 🙏

At age 91, Eezhaventhan aiyya decides to rest and leaves a legacy for us to learn and follow.  If you take the political history of Tamils in Eezham, he is the ONLY name who has uncompromisingly stood for Tamil nationalist ideology.  He dedicated over 70 years of his life to Tamil nationalism.

Born as Kanendran Ganakasabapathy Manikavasakar, changed his name to Eezhaventhan to represent what he stood for. After completing his studies, proficient in Tamil and English, he joined the Central Bank of Sri Lanka as a translator.  He left the service in 1980 as Head of the Tamil Translation Division due to Tamil oppression by Sinhala State.

His interest in politics started as a teenager when he became a member of Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi, ITAK in 1952. From a staunch Tamil nationalist, he became an ardent political activist when the “Sinhala only act” was introduced by the Sri Lankan State. This is also the time when he started writing political articles under the pseudonym ‘Eezaventhan’ in the ITAK’s magazine 'Suthanthiran'. Since then, he has been addressed as Eezaventhan in the political arena as well. He was well-versed in the history of Eezham and the importance of Tamil nationalism and its politics for Tamils. Many who knew him lovingly described him as a ‘data scientist’ due to his extensive knowledge of politics and the history of Tamils.

Like most Tamils, he also had a front-row seat for oppression by Sinhala State.  He and his family were directly impacted by the 1977 anti-Tamil riot and with the 1983 riot, they relocated to Tamil Nadu.  In Tamil Nadu, he worked with the refugee organization led by Chandrakasan and he also spearheaded the political aspirations of Tamils in Eezham. Those who have seen him in Tamil Nadu know his work and dedication to the Tamil cause. He showed up at every rally or meeting related to Eezham and made sure he was distributing information/flyers that contained Eezha cause.   He was falsely accused and arrested in Tamil Nadu where he spent time in jail as well.  In 2000,  he was expatriated to Sri Lanka from Tamil Nadu, where his wife and 2 daughters continue to reside. When he was deported to Sri Lanka, he became an MP. This too didn’t last long. He was stripped of his title and later forced to move to Toronto, Canada where his political aspiration continued, which was his home till he passed.

His political theory is written in a short book by him, titled 'Tamilman Kappom, Thayakam Meedpom'. The book describes how Tamils in Sri Lanka were systematically, and historically, oppressed by the Sinhalese and how Sinhalaziation continues to be imposed in ethnic Tamil land. He proposed the necessity of a separate Tamil nation, with the Northern Province and the Eastern Province.  His book contained irrefutable statistics that continue to reiterate the need for Tamil Eelam.

As we have seen betrayal by many Tamil leaders, he always stood by the ideology he chose to travel in.  He had a unique delivery of speeches that attracted many from early on and his speeches always ended with the motto: ‘Eezham vellum, athai kaalam sollunm’.   From his speeches to the scarf he wore, he represented his ideology and the need for Tamil Eelam for Tamils.  Thank you for inspiring many generations, and to come…

ஈழம் வெல்லும், அதை காலம் சொல்லும்…Rest easy, Aiyya.

P.S. Many questioned him why he was living alone in Canada and he always answered them saying 'I may not have my family but I have all my Tamil children to take care of me'. His final send-off reflected nothing but that🧡💛
